In his book To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth, Cooper wrote about wanting to design a rifle for soldiers who were not primarily shooters, such as tank crews, shooting a round that would be decisive when used for defense. In fact, this is the platform the cartridge was originally designed for.īushmaster designed a rifle that would work with the round and Hornady came up with the cartridge itself and nicknamed it the “Thumper”-a hat tip to Jeff Cooper, who first envisioned the concept. ![]() The company’s Ruger American Ranch chambered for that cartridge has been one of Ruger’s best-selling rifles, so it only made sense to bring one out in the popular AR platform. Last year Ruger added a model to their AR-556® MPR line chambered for the. But if you want something to play with that blows a fire ball 2-3ft out the end of the barrel.Ruger AR556 MPR in. ![]() The barrel is way to light and short to hold still shooting free handed. It’s not good for anything but fun in my opinion. I already have a TC 20in katahdin barrel in 460 S&W. With the strong action loading specs in a single shot and 2,300fps and 2,600fps in a lever gun. With the 45/70 in a 24in barrel I can hit 2,500fps with a 300gr and 2800fps with a 250gr. The 45/70 will out do both and has the best bullet choices. I didn’t realize how many bolt guns was made in this caliber. The 450 BM has the least recoil and best gun choices. The 444 marlin is a great gun but it has the worst bullet choices. The 3 options I was looking at was 450 BM, 444 marlin and 45/70. I have probably 10 bottleneck cartridge deer rifles for deer hunting also. I want to replace that marlin 444 with a heavy bullet big bore brush gun. There both right at 400 bucks, which is what I can order a MGM barrel for my Prohunter. I was mainly just interested in the Ruger American Ranch and CVA Scout because of the price. You won't find more information anywhere else, period! ĬVA Scout V2 pickup and first range session. 450 Bushmaster in any configuration, you will not find a site with more information anywhere.īy now I had already returned the stainless and had the blued version. Here are some threads I posted on Michigan Sportsman. I also ordered the CVA Scout V2 from a local dealer. Randy's credited the difference back to my card. It's a 6 hour round trip to Randy's from my house, so I told Ruger and Randy that they would be buying my 1-1/2 week old rifle back, and I got the blued catalog model with the brake. I had a stainless RAR first from Randy's, but Ruger recalled all the rifles made on that same day. Both came with brakes, and both shoot well. I have both the Ruger American 16.12" barrel, and CVA Scout V2 23-3/16" barrel. I personally did not want one with a brake, just did not think it needed it, and now that I have one for me it did not. Mine is not that loud but those brakes might make it load, they usually do. They say they recoil like a 20ga Slug gun but I am not sure that it really has that much recoil. The 450BM is a real pleasure to shoot too and very accurate. My guess is that the 22" Ruger barrel and the CVA is not that far apart in the FPS range. I have not seen the CVA in Person, but have chatted with Busta and he says his is a shooter. I like mine quite a bit and harvested a doe with it at 182 yds this past fall in SE Ohio. With a load of Lil Gun and the 250FTX I get 2330 out of mine at 10' from the muzzle. The Ruger "Go Wild" comes with a different Brake than the Ranch and it also has a 22" barrel. The Brakes will screw off and a cap could be put on them. Randys also had some Blue/Black and a few Ranch in stainless too. ![]() Stainless, Black synthetic, 22" barrel with no brake. Randy's in Bad Ax Michigan might have a few of his dealer exclusives left. Technically there is only 2 Rugers cataloged but there is 3 or 4 versions. I have not shot both, but member Busta has both.
